What is the definition of a melanoma?

A

-Malignant neoplasm of melanocytes (melanin producing cells) mainly arising in the skin

Other sites: nasal cavities, retina, GI mucosa

Difference between melanoma and SCC?

A

-SCC superficial layers, melanoma deeper layer (granulosum)
-continuous vs intermittent sun exposure
-Arises in sun exposed areas vs anywhere
-Appears as red bump/scaly patch/non healing sore vs irregular mole
-Better vs poorer prognosis
-Metastasis less vs more common

What is epitheloid melanoma?

A

-Melanoma cells can be categorised into 2 major cell types: epithelioid and spindle cell
-Epithelioid are large and round with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm, prominent vesicular nuclei and large nucleoli
-They most commonly arise in superficial spreading and nodular melanomas

What is a satellyte lesion?

A

-Form of local spread of malignant melanoma by contiguity and continuity leading to pigment spreading to surrounding area. FOund within 2cm of primary tumour
