Mitosis vs Meiosis
A
Mitosis:
- Purpose: Growth and repair in body cells.
- Outcome: 2 identical daughter cells.
- Chromosome Number: Same as parent cell (diploid).
- Genetic Variation: No new genetic variation.
- Occurs in: Somatic cells.
Meiosis:
- Purpose: Formation of gametes (sperm/eggs).
- Outcome: 4 different daughter cells.
- Chromosome Number: Halved from parent cell (haploid).
- Genetic Variation: Introduces new genetic variation.
- Occurs in: Germ cells for sexual reproduction.
