Meiosis and inheritance Flashcards
1
Q
whta are the principles of mendelian inheritance?
A
> uniformity
- characteristics are retained through generations
- can skip a generation and reappear in subsequent generations
segregation
- only 1 allele at a time
independent assortment
- separation of alleles (doesn’t always happen)
2
Q
how is genetic diversity achieved?
A
> homologous recombination
- gametes exchange alleles from the maternal and paternal chromatid of the same chromosome.
- therefore each gamete receives a mis of DNA from both parents
3
Q
what is a proband?
A
the individual first diagnosed with a genetic condition, the top of a pedigree chart
