Meiosis and Genetic Diversity Flashcards
What are 4 differences between meiosis and mitosis?
-Meiosis has 2 nuclear divisions but mitosis only have 1
-Meiosis produces 4 cells but mitosis produces 2
-Meiosis produces genetically different cells but mitosis produces genetically identical cells
-Meiosis produces haploid cells but mitosis produces cells with the same number of chromosomes as the parent cell
What are the life cycle ‘equations’?
(4)
- 2n—>n (meiosis)
-2n—>2n (mitosis)
-n—>n ( mitosis)
-n+n—>2n (fertilisation)
What are the stages of mitosis?
1-Interphase with semi-conservative DNA replication
Chromosomes become replicated chromosomes
2- Meiosis 1 is the first cell division when homologous pairs separate
3- Meiosis 2 is the second cell division when sister chromatids separate
4- You end up with 4 haploid non-identical gametes
