Meiosis Flashcards
What is produced by meiosis?
Gametes
What is different about cells produced by meiosis
only contain 23 chromosomes
What happens before the cell divides?
duplicates genetic information forming two armed chromosomes, after replication the chromosomes arrange themselves into pairs
What happens at the first division?
The chromosomes pairs line up in the centre of the cell then are pulled apart so each new cell has 2 copy of chromosomes some of the fathers and mothers go into each new cell
What happens in the second division?
Chromosomes line up again in the centre of the cell and the arms of the chromosomes are pulled apart
What is the end result in meiosis?
Get 4 gametes with each only a single set of chromosomes, each gamete is genetically different as the chromosomes are shuffled up during meiosis and the gamete only gets half of them
After the two gametes fused during fertilisation how does the new cell divide?
Mitosis
What happens when the embryo develops?
it differentiates to become specilised
