Meiosis Flashcards
1
Q
Meiosis 1
A
Chromosomes line up in homologous pairs in metaphase.
Chromosomes are pulled to opposite poles of the cell in anaphase.
Crossing over occurs where the chromosomes get twisted and exchange alleles between homologous chromosomes, producing new combinations of alleles.
Independent segregation occurs where maternal and paternal chromosomes are reshuffled in any combination. Creates new combination of alleles.
2
Q
Meiosis 2
A
Like mitosis, except starts with cells with half the number of chromosomes.
3
Q
Meiosis
A
Makes 4 daughter cells (gametes)
Haploid cells so half the number of chromosomes
4
Q
Importance of meiosis
A
Meiosis halves the number of chromosomes
