meiosis Flashcards
meiosis
cell division that occurs in the sex organs for the formation of gametes. meiosis mixes existing cells together into new combinations.
gametes
unfertilized reproductive cell (egg or sperm)
they are haploid cells (only 23 chromosomes)
segregation
the independent separation of alleles on different chromosomes (one allele for one gamete)
independent assortment
homologous pairs line up in a random order in metaphase 1
crossing over
is the exchange of alleles between homologous pairs (can separate linked genes) parts of non sister chromosomes can cross over, break and rejoin.
zygote
a fertilized egg
recombination
Chromosomes created when crossing over combines the DNA from two parents into a single chromosome.
linked genes
two genes that are located on the same chromosome and tend to be inherited together
