Meiosis Flashcards
Prophase 1
Chromosomes condense (supercoil) to make the replicated sister chromatids visible, centrosomes move to opposite sides and begin forming spindle fibers. Crossing over occurs. Homologous chromosomes pair. Nuclear membrane begins to break down.
Metaphase 1
Homologous pairs align at the equatorial plane. Their alignment is random which makes the process called independent assortment.
Anaphase 1
Spindle fibers (made from microtubules) pull the homologous chromosomes apart towards the centrosomes.
Telophase 1 + Cytokinesis
Two haploid cells are formed with two chromosomes (two sister-chromatids) each. Cytokinesis - Cells split.
Prophase 2
Nuclear membrane breaks down, centrosomes move to opposite poles, spindle fibers begin to form.
Metaphase 2
Sister Chromatids line up on equatorial plane.
Anaphase 2
Sister Chromatids split, creating 8 individual chromosomes.
Telophase 2 + Cytokinesis
Two haploid cells are formed with two chromosomes (two chromatids) each. Cytokinesis - Cells split.
