Meiosis Flashcards
what does meiosis lead to?
gametes (sexual reproduction)
Examples of sex cells (gametes)
sperm cell and egg cell
What does the term ‘haploid’ mean?
A cell that only has half the normal amount of genetic material
How many chromosomes does a human gamete have?
23
During the process of meiosis, how many times does the cell divide?
2
As a result of meiosis, how many cells are produced?
4
Are the cells produced by meiosis genetically identical to each other, or genetically unique?
genetically unique
What happens in 1st step of meiosis?
all cells replicate
What happens in 2nd step of meiosis?
two armed chromosomes line up along centre of cell in pairs
What happens in 3rd step of meiosis?
Chromosomes pairs pulled apart split into 2, get randomly distributed with each half of cell getting different combination of maternal and paternal chromosomes
What happens in 4th step of meiosis?
Chromosomes line up along centre of cell again however the 2 arms of each chromosome that are posed to each other are opposite side of cell. when cell ready to divide in half again , now 4 cells.
