Meiosis Flashcards
Meiosis in simple terms
Only occurs in gametes (sex cells). Used for sexual reproduction.
Prophase 1 - prepare
Coil-copy-crossing over of pairs
Chromosomes exchange bits.
Metaphase 1 - middle
Pairs line up down the middle (23 pairs)
Anaphase 1 - away
Spindle fibres attach to a whole chromosome, and pull a whole chromosome to either end.
Telophase 1 - two
The nuclear envelope pinches in and becomes two - then PAUSES
Prophase 2
Not much happens, chromosomes line up again.
Still copied in the X-shape.
Metaphase 2
Copied but mixed up chromosomes line up in the middle in ONE line of 23 chromosomes.
Anaphase 2
Spindle fibres attach to random chromatids and pull chromosomes apart.
Telophase 2
Nuclear envelope pinches in and becomes two.
