Meiosis Flashcards
How many functional mature sperm cells form when a single primary spermatocyte in teste undergoes meiosis
4
How many functional egg cells form when a single primary oocyte in the ovaries undergoes meiosis in females
Four could but 3 cells form into polar bodies so only one is functional
What is ploidy?
The amount of copies of a chromosome
How many unique sperm or egg cells do humans have the probability of making?
2^23
What is a chromosome made of?
DNA wrapped around proteins
Difference between a chromosome and gene?
A gene is a segment of DNA that make up a chromosome
Laws of segregation
Homologous pairs will separate from eachother
Independent assortment
Maternal 1 chromosome moves into one cell paternal 1 chromosome must move into the other one but that specific pattern does not have to occur with the other chromosomes, they can split to either side as much as they want
Gene
Segment of DNA that has instructions for a trait
Allele
A version of a gene
Why do some people have 3 copies of chromosome 21
When copied homologe separate from i other to move into opposite cells, sometimes they go into the same cell. So when one gamete now has 2 chromosome 21 and the other has 1 the offspring will have 3
Zygote
Fusion of sperm+egg cells
Purpose of Meiosis
To make sex cells from diploid to haploid so when the sperm fertilizes the egg it does not double chromosomes each generation
Rules of DNA transfer from parents to offspring
- Offspring can only get what the parents have to give
- There must be one copy of each chromosome from each parent
- Offspring must have the same number of chromosomes as the parents
