Ecosystems Flashcards
Does a polymer in a plant remain the same polymer in an animal when it eats the plant?
Those polymers get turned into monomers during digestion and during biosynthesis those monomers turn into whatever polymers the cells need to respirate
Does a monomer in a plant stay the same monomer when eaten by an animal?
It can remain the same if that monomer is needed for biosynthesis or it could be converted to a different monomer
Overall do polymers/monomers stay the same
Polymers will always change however monomers may stay the same
If a c atom from a plant or animal is consumed by another animal is it a c atom it’s entire existence?
Yes. matter cannot be created not destroyed.
Does chemical energy in the bonds of molecules stay as chemical energy?
No, energy originally enters the plant as light energy then transformed into chemical energy which is then released as heat
When a decomposer grows on a dead tree, does it return the molecules to the ground as those same molecules?
It would only stay the same if a part of the plants falls off and becomes detritus. Otherwise, Decomposers will digest the materials and rearrange the molecules into what they need and/or respire those molecules
Do decomposers recycle some atoms from dead things back to producers?
Yes because atoms do not change
Do decomposers return the energy found in the bonds of the molecules of the dead things they are decomposing back to the ground?
No because the energy found in the cc ch bonds will end up being released at heat
Are carbon atoms able to leave the ecosystem they are in? Can they be reused?
Yes CO2 in atmosphere can travel in and out of ecosystems. Respired CO2 can be used during photosynthesis to make glucose.
Can energy leave the ecosystem it is in? Can it be reused?
It can leave as heat but cannot be reused
What’s the populations sizes of prey v predators?
There will always be more prey than predators
Movement of inorganic and organic material?
Photosynthesis brings in inorganic CO2 in organic sugars
Why isn’t all the matter than an herbivore consumes available to carnivores?
Because herbivores respirate Co2 and H2O which may enter the atmosphere. They also defecate matter.
What is the only way for the matter in carnivores to return to an ecosystem
They could respirate which a plant om could use for photosynthesis. They could also defecate/ die and decomposers would use that matter
Does all of the matter in a trophic level (herbivore/omnivore) get consumed by the next?
No because some organisms camouflage, release toxins, or flee.
