Meiosis Flashcards
What is meiosis?
Usually produces 4 daughter cells each with half the number of chromosomes as the parent cell
When does meiosis occur?
I’m most animals meiosis occurs in the formation of gametes
What happens during meiosis?
Homologous pairs of chromosomes separate so that the only one chromosome from each pair enters a daughter cell (haploid cell)
What’s the process of meiosis?
The first division: homologous chromosomes pair up and their chromatids wrap around each other, equivalent portions of these chromatids may be exchanged in a process called crossing over. By the end of the division the homologous pairs have separated with one chromosome from each pair going into 2 daughter cells.
The second meiotic division: the chromatids move apart. At the end 4 cells have usually have been formed
