Give examples of the meglitinides.
Nateglinide (only with metformin) and repaglinide.
What is the mechanism of action of the meglitinides?
Rapid acting secretagogues (promote insulin secretion) from the pancreas when blood glucose levels are at their highest and not at fasting levels. Short duration of action.
What are the side effects of the meglitinides?
Hypos, hypersensitivity reactions (pruritis, rashes), abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting.
Which side effect has only been reported with the use of repaglinide?
Visual disturbances.
In what circumstances is repaglinide recommended by NICE?
If metformin is contraindicated.
When should meglitinides be taken?
30 minutes before main meals due to short duration of action.
