Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists (GLP1a) Flashcards
Give examples of GLP1as.
Exenatide, liraglutide, lixisenatide, albiglutide, dulaglutide.
What is the mechanism of action of the GLP1as?
Bind to and activate the GLP-1 receptor, increasing insulin secretion, suppressing glucagon secretion and slowing gastric emptying.
What are the side effects of the GLP1as?
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, GI upset, headaches, pancreatitis, weight loss.
What serious side effect may be experienced with exenatide?
Severe pancreatitis which may be fatal.
Due to the risk of hypoglycemia, when should lixisenatide not be used?
With basal insulin and sulfonylureas.
What can occur with MR exenatide use?
SC nodules.
How long after MR exenatide discontinuation may the effects persist?
10 weeks.
What symptoms of acute pancreatitis should patients on GLP1as be aware of?
Persistent and severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting.
What advice should be given to patients on GLP1as who miss a dose?
Not to administer after a meal. For exenatide, continue with next scheduled dose. For lixisenatide, inject within one hour before next meal.
How should patients be advised to take other medication in relation to exenatide and lixisenatide?
At least one hour before or four hours after.
Where should GLP1as be stored?
In the fridge.
