meds Class + Use Flashcards
What is Lidocaine (Lidoderm)?
Class: Local anesthetic, antiarrhythmic.
Use: Used for local anesthesia or to numb specific areas of the body. It also treats arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms) by stabilizing the heart’s electrical activity.
What is Epinephrine (Adrenalin)?
Class: Sympathomimetic (adrenergic agonist).
Use: Increases heart rate, improves blood pressure, and dilates the airways. Commonly used in anaphylaxis, cardiac arrest, and severe asthma attacks.
What is Midazolam (Versed)?
Class: Benzodiazepine.
Use: A sedative and anxiolytic, often used for pre-procedural sedation, anesthesia induction, or for seizures.
What is Dopamine (Inotropin)?
Class: Catecholamine, inotropic agent.
Use: Improves heart function by increasing heart rate and contractility. Also used to raise blood pressure in cases of shock.
What is Succinylcholine (Anectine)?
Class: Depolarizing neuromuscular blocker.
Use: Used to induce muscle relaxation (paralysis) for procedures such as intubation.
What is Atropine Sulfate (Atropine)?
Class: Anticholinergic.
Use: Increases heart rate by blocking the parasympathetic nervous system. Used in bradycardia (low heart rate) and as a pre-anesthetic to reduce secretions.
What is Dobutamine (Dobutrex)?
Class: Sympathomimetic (beta-1 adrenergic agonist)
Use: Increases heart rate and contractility, improving cardiac output in heart failure or shock.
What is Mannitol (Osmitrol)?
Class: Osmotic diuretic
Use: Reduces swelling and pressure inside the eyes or brain. Used to manage conditions like intracranial pressure and acute renal failure.
What is Albuterol (ProAir)?
Class: Beta-2 adrenergic agonist
Use: Relieves bronchospasm in conditions like asthma or COPD by relaxing the muscles in the airways.
What is Diltiazem (Cardizem)?
Class: Calcium channel blocker
Use: Used to treat hypertension, angina, and certain arrhythmias by relaxing blood vessels and slowing heart rate.
What is Nitroprusside Sodium (Nipride)?
Class: Vasodilator
Use: Lowers blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels. Often used in hypertensive emergencies or to control blood pressure during surgery.
What is Propofol (Diprivan)?
Class: Anesthetic agent
Use: A sedative and anesthetic used for induction and maintenance of general anesthesia, as well as for sedation in intensive care.
What is Adenosine (Adenocard)?
Class: Antiarrhythmic
Use: Temporarily slows down the heart rate to treat certain types of supraventricular tachycardia (SVT).
What is Phenylephrine (Neo-Synephrine)?
Class: Alpha-1 adrenergic agonist
Use: Increases blood pressure by constricting blood vessels. Also used as a decongestant in nasal sprays.
What is Naloxone (Narcan)?
Class: Opioid antagonist
Use: Reverses opioid overdose by binding to opioid receptors, counteracting respiratory depression and sedation.
What is Vasopressin (Pitressin)?
Class: Antidiuretic hormone (ADH)
Use: Used to treat diabetes insipidus, shock, and as a vasoconstrictor in some forms of cardiac arrest.
What is Norepinephrine (Levophed)?
Class: Catecholamine (adrenergic agonist)
Use: Vasoconstrictor, used to raise blood pressure in cases of shock or hypotension, particularly in sepsis.
What is Amiodarone (Cordarone)?
Class: Antiarrhythmic
Use: Used to treat life-threatening arrhythmias (ventricular fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia), and atrial fibrillation.
What is Eptifibatide (Integrillin)?
Class: Glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitor
Use: Prevents platelet aggregation, commonly used in acute coronary syndrome and to prevent clot formation during angioplasty.
What is Aggrastat?
Aggrastat is a medication also known as Tirofiban.
What class of drug is Aggrastat?
Aggrastat belongs to the class of Glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitors.
What is the use of Aggrastat?
Aggrastat is used to prevent platelet aggregation and reduce the risk of heart attack or clot formation during heart procedures.
