What is the treatment for ARDS?
No Drugs. Tracheostomy.
Includes sedation with Dexmedetomidine and paralytic vecuronium.
What is a complication associated with ventilators?
Ventilator Associated Pneumonias.
Includes Protonix for peptic ulcer prophylaxis.
What is the first step in intubation?
Sedate
This is typically done to ensure patient comfort.
What medication is used to paralyze during intubation?
Succinylcholine
This is a rapid-acting neuromuscular blocker.
What is another medication that can be used to paralyze?
Vecuronium
This is a non-depolarizing neuromuscular blocker.
What is Pantoprazole (Protonix) used for?
Prevent stress ulcers
What type of anesthetic is Propofol?
Fast acting anesthetic
What should be done if long-term sedation is required with Propofol?
Switched around 3 days to something else
What are the side effects of Propofol?
Hypotension, bradycardia, hyperlipidemia, respiratory depression
Wean it if needing to wake them up
What type of drug is Midazolam?
Benzo
What is the nature of Midazolam as an anesthetic?
Long acting anesthetic, watch for oversedation
What are the side effects of Midazolam?
Hypotension, bradycardia, respiratory depression
Titrate and wean
What type of drug is Dexmedetomidine?
Sedative drip, short acting
What is an advantage of using Dexmedetomidine?
Easier to wean and extubate
What are the side effects of Dexmedetomidine?
Bradycardia, hypotension
Does NOT affect respiratory system
What is Vecuronium used for?
Paralytic
When is Vecuronium particularly useful?
Good for pts with very poor respiratory function, perfusion
What is a significant effect of Vecuronium?
Will cause apnea
What type of drug is Succinylcholine?
Paralytic, not used as drip
What is a significant effect of Succinylcholine?
Will cause apnea
What are the side effects of Succinylcholine?
Hyperkalemia
