Explain the field system
Every person in the village would get strips of land, to grow crops. They divided their land to let each piece rest. E.g the first year what would grow in North field, the second year barley would grow in North field and the goodness from the soil, which the wheat didn’t take and the third year North field would be fallow so it could get its goodness back.
List three problems with the land, the villeins had.
- There’s not a lot of land
- You can claim more land than is yours
- Some strips may be more productive than others
What does The Lord of the Manor do
He owns all the land and most if the people in the village. The King gave The Lord of the Manor all the land in return The Lord of the Manor must give the King armed soldiers. He acts as a judge in the Manor court.
What does the reeve do
He has a special job. He gets paid 2p a week and has a bigger house than the villeins
What does the priest do
He learnt to read and speak Latin. He visits those who are sick. He also gives as much as he can to the poor.
What does the carpenter do
He makes things out of wood for the Manor house. He gets silver for his work. His wife works with him and he has an apprentice.
What does a Swine herd do
He looks after pigs. He’s paid 3p a week. Him and his wife kill the pigs and salt them.
What does a weaver do
He makes cloth and clothing. The Lord of the Manor uses his services. Most of the sheep’s wool comes to him so if people want any they come to him.
What does a sheep farmer do
He is free. He can keep the meat to eat or sell it. The weaver uses his wool so it is valueable.

What does a Brewster do
She makes ale for those who can afford it. The Manor doesn’t have a well so it is safer. It is very healthy as it is made of the best barley and honey. She is married to the miller.
What does the miller do
He owns a windmill, a barn and his house. He turns the village corn into flour. He is the busiest in the harvest. He is married to he Brewster.
What does the smith do
He mends the manor ploughs, shoe the Lords horses and grind his scythes and shears. He gets four acres of land for his work. He also makes money by making tools for the villeins.
What does the villein do
He isn’t free and doesn’t own any land or his house. He can’t leave the manor without permission and he works long hours from sunset to daybreak. His wife works alongside him.
What does a day labourer do
She is the youngest daughter of a large villein family. She isn’t skilful enough to weave and she isn’t rich enough to become a nun.
