Medieval Towns Flashcards
What were used for protection?
Stone walls protected the town from attack, and gateways were controlled. Watchmen patrolled the town walls at night
What was life like in medieval towns?
All town dwellers were free and did not belong to a Lord. This meant that men could choose their own employment.
Others were merchants. Many townsmen were poor and worked as servants or labourers. Town dwellers usually had to pay Tallages to the King
Who were tradesmen?
Tradesmen trained as apprentices to highly skilled master craftsmen. They were often members of a guild who had the right to trade in that town in return for members fees and payment of taxes
Who were merchants?
Merchants sold food, raw materials and textiles in towns across England and even in Europe, especially the Low Countries. Some merchants were very wealthy. Custom duties on all imports and exports were paid to the King.
