How did the black death arrive in England
In the summer of 1348, a ship had arrived in Weymouth, Dorset.
The crew didn’t know that their goods
was the black death
What was the effect of the Black Death?
It affected 1/3 of population in months
It spread quickly through ports and got to big cities such as London and Oxford
People thought it would be over quickly so that their sons could continue the job (they were wrong)
What did people believe caused the Black Death?
- People listened to the Church as they were very religious (you’d be punished if you didn’t)
- Scientists believed that it was astrology as planets have been in unusual positions (they thought it was earthquakes releasing foul air)
- The medieval Church beieved that it was God punishing people for their sins and that the end of the world would be called Judgement Day

why did the peasants revolt begin in 1381?
Slavery and hard work and labour annoyed them as well as poll tax
What happened during the revolt?
It began in Essex and spread to Southeast Yorkshire
50,000 people were waiting to revolt (that was huge)
The rebels were mad and targeted tax collectors
(they killed simon sudbury and the kings treasurer)
How did the revolt end?
Tyler asked for a new Magna Carta
The king said yes and watt tyler was killed
he said ‘you will have no captain but me’ (that ended it)
What were the consequences of the revolt?
The king was out for blood and killed 2000 peasants and John Ball who was hung, drawn and quartered
What is poll tax
Everyone had to pay 1 shilling
(easy for the rich but hard for the poor)
