What problems did King John inherit?

Answer 1

1.No army (King Richard had gotten them all killed in the French invasion)
2. No one liked him - he taxed the Barons too much
3. Angevin Empire (too much land to control)

Why did the Church and King John fall out so badly?

Answer 2

1. He was disrespectful to the Church
2. Competition on who had more power/who wanted to be Archbishop of Canterbury
3. King John wanted John De Grey to be the Archbishop but the pope wanted a guy called Stephen
   (John was mean to the Church meaning he would go to hell)

-The first document to show protection and rights of people and that the King was not above the government and the law

-Free men had to go through a trial rather than be jailed instantly

-People were angry at the King and made him sign it otherwise he would die
