When was the Battle of Hastings and who fought in it?
The Battle of Hastings took place in 1066 and was between William of Normandy and King Harold.
What is the Magna Carta? Why is it still important today?
The Magna Carta was the first ever document to outline the rights of the English. After it was drawn up, King John was forced to give it his royal seal. The Magna Carta is still significant today as it underlines the basic rights and liberties of citizens under the law.
How many Crusades were there in total?
In total, there were 8 major Crusade expeditions.
The aim of the first crusade?
The first crusade began in 1096, between the Christians and the Muslims. It continued for the next 175 years. The objective was to reclaim the city of Jerusalem and the Holy Land from Muslim control.
Define the term ‘Dark Ages’
The dark ages was often used to refer to the period of constant warfare. It was after the fall of the roman empire.
Why did feudalism emerge after the fall of the Roman Empire?
Feudalism emerged as there was no Roman Empire to enforce the laws, leading to the collapse of society.
How did the Domesday book give William the Conqueror more power?
The Domesday book gave William the Conqueror more power as it allowed him to work out how to tax the population. He could asses the kingdoms wealth as well as who owned which parts of the land.
What is a fief?
The king was required to provide his nobles directly below him with land to live on. This was known as a fief.
Describe the relationship between a vassal and a lord.
The king kept 25% of his land and granted 75% to his vassals.
What is a hierarchy?
A hierarchy is a social structure that organises people from most important on the top to least important on the bottom.
Identify who was responsible for business matters on the manor.
The lord of the manor was responsible for the business matters on the manor.
How were crops rotated in medieval Europe?
The crop lands were divided into three fields. Each year a different field was not farmed to allow the soil to recover its nutrients. The the crops in the second field were being harvested, the third were being planted.
Describe one way in which an eleventh-century noblewoman might ‘advertise’ that she was wealthy by the way she dressed.
Wealthy women may wear long garments with elaborate sleeves.
Food for the rich
Meats, fish, fruits, soft cheese, eggs, vegetables, sauces, soups, salads, white bread, pies and tarts. They would drink wine, ale or mead
