Population density is a measure of population in relation to land area.
Migration
The movement from one location to another with the intention of settlement.
Identify three reasons why people move from rural areas to urban areas.
- less job opportunities
- for a better education
- lack of health care facilities
Describe three problems faced by people living in megacities.
Traffic congestion as it worsens air pollution
High Living Costs - As these cities grow, the cost of living becomes higher
High Crime Rates - As more people are living in city areas, crime rates are often higher due to social inequalities within communities.
Suburbanisation
Suburbanisation is the process of expanding cities further by building new housing estates, infrastructure and businesses.
Explain how suburbanisation has influenced the size and shape of Australia’s cities.
Suburbanisation has influenced the size of Australia’s cities as it has caused them to continue to expand in overall size-a process called urban sprawl.
Think of many advantages of living in cities.
- More job opportunities
- Better forms of transport such as airports
- Better services such as schools and hospitals.
Think of many disadvantages of living in cities.
Traffic Congestion
Higher levels of pollution
Higher crime rates
Noise
Over crowding
Describe the role of an urban planner.
The role of an urban planner is to help the government to make decisions that allow cities to grow.
List two advantages and two disadvantages of suburbanisation.
Two Advantages:
- Residents can have a large home with a
backyard
- Industries are attracted to these areas because
of the cheaper land prices and rent.
Two Disadvantages:
- Infrastructure can be lacking in these areas
- Clearing land impacts plants and animals
Distinguish between suburbanisation and decentralisation.
Suburbanisation is the process of expanding cities further beyond their fringes by building new housing estates, infrastructure and businesses , whereas decentralisation is the process of creating jobs to increase the poluation growth of smaller towns and cities.
Decentralisation
Increase of the populational growth through jobs forming.
