The church had a huge network of priests and bishops
(religion was very prevalent through this time)

books were hand written by monks and this mean education and knowledge was slow to spread

People did not question their own beliefs or challenge the church which meant that they only followed what the church said.

The king had to raise an army and defend the country, taxes were only raised for war, councils had to clean the streets but had little money to do so

The church controlled Educ, especially in universities where physicians trained.
Why were work and harvests a factor?
most people were farmers and had hard work and did not have enough time to be educated

dung, horse transport and butchery caused a lot of dirt in the streets
