Who was Hippocrates?
he was an Ancient Greek physician that theorised the theory of the four humours and was known as the ‘Father of western medicine’.
Who was Galen?
A doctor in Ancient Rome. His ideas were recorded in more than 350 books and also developed the Theory of opposites.
Who was Edward I?
He reigned England from 1272-1307 and aimed to touch 2,000 people a year sit it was believed that the ‘kings touch’ cures tuberculosis.
When was the Black Death?
1328-1349
What was the Black Death caused by?
Fleas from rats carried by ships.
What were buboes?
A swelling, especially in armpit or groin.
Who were flagellants and what did they do?
They were people who would beat or whip themselves in public to show god their forgiveness for their sins.
Who were apothecaries?
They prepared and sold remedies to physicians and directly to patients. Some also offered advice on how best to use them.
Most were men but some were also ‘wise women’ who sold herbal remedies.
Mostly trained through apprenticeships.
They were the most common form of treatment as they were the most accessible for those who couldn’t afford a physician.
Who were physicians?
They were male doctors who had to train at university for at least seven years.
they read from ancient texts and writings but didn’t have much practical experience.
They used clinical observations and handbooks to check patients conditions.\They were extremely expensive so only the rick could afford them.
Who were barber-surgeons?
They could perform minor surgical procedures like bloodletting and pulling teeth.
They had very little medical training or insight.
What was surgery like during this time?
It was very dangerous as there was no way of preventing blood loss, infection or pain.
What was bloodletting?
the surgical removal of some of the patients blood.
What was purging?
The removal of something from the body by being given a laxative or emetic.
