Medicolegal aspects of Wounds Flashcards
Effects of stimulus on the body, damage to the body caused by trauma.
Physical Injury
Causes of Physical Injuries
-Physical Violence
-Heat or Cold
-Electrical Energy
-Chemical Energy
-Radiation by Radioactive Substance
-Change of Atmospheric Pressure (Barotrauma)
-Infection
solution of the natural continuity if any tissue of the living body
Wound
higher KE causes greater damage
Kinetic Energy
shorter the time needed for transfer, greater the likelihood of producing damage.
Time
larger the area of contact, the lesser the damage to the body.
Area of Transfer
less elastic the greater the likelihood of laceration.
Elasticity of the tissue
Vital Reactions
Rubor- redness
Calor- Increase of temprature
Dolor- pain
Loss of function
Tumor- swelling
Classification of Wounds
-As to severity
-As to kind of instrument used
-As to manner of infliction
-As regard to depth
-As to the site of the application of force and location of injury
-As regard to the regions or organs of the body
is capable of causing death immediately after infliction.
As to severity: Mortal wound
not capable of causing death immediately after infliction.
As to severity: Non-mortal wound
resulting from an impact with DULL, FIRM SURFACE OR OBJECT.
As to kind of instrument: Blunt Force Injuries
Blunt force trauma injuries
Swelling
Tenderness
Pain
Reddening
causes contusion, hematoma, lacerated wound.
As to the kind of instrument used: Blunt Instrument
causes incised, punctured, stab wounds.
As to the kind of instrument used: Sharp Instrument
causes lacerated wounds
As to the kind of instrument used: Wounds brought by tearing
As to the kind of instrument used: by change in atmospheric pressure
Barotrauma
Wounds brought by heat or cold
Burns
Scalds
Frostbite
Burns that affects dermis part of the skin
First Degree burn
Burns that affects dermis to epidermis part of the skin
Second Degree Burn
Burns that affects dermis to subcutaneous part of the skin
Third Degree Burn
As to manner of Infliction caused by bolo, blunt instrument, and axe.
Hit
As to manner of Infliction caused by a dagger
Thrust/stab
As to manner of Infliction caused by projectile or shrapnel wound.
Gunpowder explosion
As regard to the depth which causes wounds and abrasions leave the deeper skin layers intact.
Superficial Wounds
As regard to the depth, caused by objects that penetrate the body, that is, they pierce the skin and lacerate.
Penetrating Wounds
As regard to the depth, this is associated with an entrance wound and an often larger exit wound.
Perforating Wounds
As regard to the site of the application of force and location injury.
Coup Injury
classically occur when the moving head (brain) strikes a stationary object.
Contrecoup injury
Decreased resistance in any internal organ or external body region
Locus Minoris Resistencia
Severe damage to the soft tissues in the skin
Extensive Injury
Classification of Wound as a regard to the regions or organs of the body
Defense Wounds
Patterned Wounds
Self-inflicted Wounds
An injury received by the victim of an attack while trying to defend against the assailant.
Defense/Defensive Wounds
Has a distinct pattern that may reproduce the characteristics of the object causing the injury.
Patterned Wounds
wound or injury is one that you do to yourself deliberately.
Self-inflicted Wounds
Motive of Producing Self-inflicted Wounds
-Magnify an existing injury/disease for pension/compensation.
-Escape certain obligation/punishment.
- To create/destroy an existing identity.
-Gain attention/sympathy.
-Psychotic behavior.
Intentional act of cutting off any part/parts of living body.
Mutilations
Kinds of Mutilation Punishable by Law
-Intentionally depriving a person partially of some essential organs for reproduction.
-Intentionally depriving a person any parts of human body other than the organ of reproduction.
