Drugs exempt from virtually all controlled requirements as active drug is in low strength
Invoices must be kept for 2 years
Eg codeine, morphine(10mg/5ml oral liquid solution only)

Subject to minimal control
Possession without Px an offence
Benzodiazepines (except temazepam and midazolam sch 3)
Non- benzodiazepines hypnotics- zolpidem, zopiclone

Controls less rigorous than Sch 2
e.g barbiturates (except secobarbital), pregabalin, temazepam, tramadol hydrochloride
Records and registers need not be kept, but invoices for 2 years needed.

Used for medicinally
Prescribing, dispensing, administration and disposal are tightly controlled
includes opiates (e.g. diamorphine hydrochloride (heroin), morphine, methadone hydrochloride, oxycodone hydrochloride, pethidine hydrochloride
illegal to possess without Px
Which CDs are covered under schedule 1
Have no known therapeutic use
Production, possession and supply only for research
Home Office license is needed for possession
eg. LSD, ecstasy
the misuse of drug act 1971 created three CLASSES of CD
A – cocaine, heroin, methadone, LSD, ecstasy
B – amphetamine, barbiturate, cannabis
C – GHB, anabolic steroids
This act also focus on possession of CD- illegal with prescription. 1968 only focus on supply of medication.

General Sale List medicines - GSL
Paracetamol – pack of 16 tablets
Pharmacy medicines - P
Paracetamol – pack of 32 tablets
Prescription Only Medicines – POM

note form and quantity can effect supply classification e.g paracetamol.
What are the 11 requirements for a CD prescription.
1 Patient name
2 Patient address
3 Age: If patient is ≤12 years
4 Drug name
5 Strength of the medicine
6 Form of the medicine
7 Dose and frequency: Clearly defined (Does
not need to be in words and figures)
8 Quantity: where medicines available as dosage
units quantity should be written in BOTH words
and figures
-Treatment Period: recommended that ≤30
days prescribed although not legal requirement
9 Prescriber’s signature
10 Prescriber’s address
11 Date: date on which prescription signed. CD
prescriptions valid for 28 days after the date on
the prescription. NB: other FP10s are valid for 6
month
N.B as stated Quantity must be BOTH words and numbers for CD Px and is only valid for 28 days.
