  • pelvic inflammatory disease
  • works by killing bacteria that cause infections, clavulanate is used to help amoxicillin work better against certain types of bacteria

  • oral 500-875mg BD for 5-10 days or longer depending on the infection, usually 2 BD for 5 days
  • IV 1g q8h; can increase to 1g q6h in serious infections. max is 2g q6h
  • with food, so can have one with breakfast & one with dinner

    • oral 50 mg once daily for at least 6 weeks; then if necessary, increase to 100 mg once daily
  • infections caused by m.pneumoniae
    • Oral, 200 mg on day 1 (as a single dose or 100 mg twice daily), then 100 mg once daily
  • Prophylaxis of malaria, start 2 days before entering and continue taking doxycycline until 4 weeks after leaving an endemic area, adult, oral 100 mg once daily

  • take in morning rather than at night
  • take with food or milk to reduce stomach upset- breakfast
  • avoid lying down for atleast an hour after taking the dose, this is to stop the medicines sticking on the way to your stomach because it can cause painful damage to the lining of your throat
  • antacids, iron, calcium or zinc supplements? take 2 hours after dose because it can interfere with absorption
  • can make you more sensitive to light, avoid sun exposure, wear protective clothing and use sunscreen while taking this medicine
  • adv: N/V/D

  • coffee? might increase caffeine effects, might need to reduce caffiene intake
  • avoid sun exposure, wear protective clothing and use sunscreen

    • oral 400 mg BD for 3 days
  • travellers diarrhoea
    • oral 800 mg as a single dose; or 400 mg BD for 3 days
    • prophylaxis: oral 400 mg daily for up to 3 weeks, starting on the day of travel and continuing for 1–2 days after leaving the area of concern
  • max is 800mg daily
  • on an empty stomach so 1hr before food or 2 hrs after food
  • drink plenty of water while taking this medicine

  • makes your skin more sensitive to light, avoid sun exposure, wear protective clothing and broad spectrum sunscreen
  • sometimes can increase effects of caffeine, may need to lower caffeine intake
  • adv: usually causes no problems but you may notice some stomach upset when you take it or maybe some nausea, headaches or dizziness

  • tablet- swallow whole with water, don’t chew
  • this medicine may make you feel dizzy or confused; avoid driving if you are affected like this
  • avoid drinking alcohol during treatment & for 24 hours after finishing the course to prevent N/V, flushing, headache and palpitations (sometimes occur when taken with alcohol)
  • all medications have side effects but not everyone will experience them
  • this medicine can cause N/V/D, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, metallic taste and headaches
