What were ways of preventing the black death in the medieval times?
- prayed

What did Alchemists do?
- Wanted to turn base metals into gold
- tried to find a substance to make people live forever.
What were soothsayers?
Local ‘wise women’ who people consulted when ill. Might prescribeplants, herbs or make charms to protect against evil.
What are some examples of medieval doctors?
- monks gave medical care
- apothecaries made herbal remedies
- barber-surgeons cut hair, pulled teeth, set broken arms
What was Hippocrates’ theory?
the four humours
What did people do to protect themselves from the great plague?
wore a nose cone full of sweet-smelling herbs
What was one way people did to prevent illness to do with the four humours?
bleeding
What did John snow do?
In the 1854 cholera epidemic he plotted cases on a map, finding a cluster around the Broad Street pump.
Snow shut the pump, causing the number of cases to fall. This proved cholera is water-borne.
Who invented the vaccination and when?
Edward Jenner in 1798
What caused the Vaccination to be invented?
Jenner realised milkmaids who’d had cowpox didn’t catch smallpox. Injecting people with harmless cowpox gave them immunity from smallpox.
When was the anti-vaccine league made and why did it oppose the vaccine?
1866 - Some disliked government control, some said vaccines went against God’s will.
What have vaccines done for the world?
- Infant mortality rate fell from 170 per 1000 in 1900 to 4 per 1000 today
- Vaccines have saved hundreds of millions of lives
