mood stabilizers
Lithium
Indicated for bipolar 1 (chronica manic episodes)
Lithium Action:
stabilizes activity of electrolytes and reduces cell excitability
Lithium Indication:
prevention of manic episodes, very safe, excreted by kidneys
Lithium Toxicity:
Na decreased = lithium reabsorbed by kidneys
Lithium therapeutic window:
0.5-1.5mEq/L
Lithium S/E
tremors, polydipsia, polyuria, dry mouth, GI upset, pulse irregs, wt. gain
Lithium Toxicity Sx’s
V/D, lethargy, ataxia, slurred speech, blurred vision, confusion, seizues, coma, death
Aripiprazole
Abilify: Atypical Antipsychotic indicated for acute manic episodes
Olanzapine:
Zyprexa: Atypical Antipsychotic indicated for acute manic episodes
Quetiapine:
Seroquel: Atypical Antipsychotic indicated for acute manic episodes
Risperidone:
Risperdal: Atypical Antipsychotic indicated for acute manic episodes
Ziprasidone:
Geodon: Atypical Antipsychotic indicated for acute manic episodes
Valproic Acid:
Depakote, Depakene: Anticonvulsant
