What is HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE used for?
Management of RA and systemic/discoid SLE.
Side Effects:
- Bulls eye retinopathy (may result in severe and permanent visual loss)
May be used if needed in pregnant women
What is DRUG-INDUCED LUPUS?
Causing SLE symptoms caused by medications including:
- Procainamide
- Hydralazine
- Isoniazid
- Minocycline
- Phenytoin
What is SULFASALAZINE used for?
A DMARD used in inflammatory arthritis, especially RA. Also used in IBD.
Side Effects:
- G6PD deficiency
- Allergy to aspirin or sulphonamides
- Oligospermia
- Pneumonitis/lung fibrosis
- Myelosuppression
- Colour tears (stain contact lenses)
Also safe to use in pregnancy and breastfeeding
What is AZATHIOPRINE used for?
Used to inhibit purine synthesis. Indicated for severe IBD and maintenance of symptoms, RA that has not responded to other disease-modifying drugs,
autoimmune conditions or suppression of transplant rejection
Side Effects:
- Bone marrow depression
- Nausea/vomiting
- Pancreatitis
- Increased risk of non-melanoma skin cancer
Safe to use in pregnancy
What are BIPHOSPHONATES used for?
Used to prevent/treat osteoporosis, hypercalcaemia, Paget’s disease and pain from bone metastases
Side effects:
- Oesophageal reactions
- Osteonecrosis of jaw
- Increased risk of atypical stress fractures
- Acute phase response: fever, myalgia, arthralgia
What is METHOTREXATE used for?
Used for inflammatory arthritis (RA), psoriasis, and some chemotherapy
Side Effects:
- Mucositis
- Myelosuppression
- Pneumonitis
- Pulmonary fibrosis
- Liver fibrosis
Must avoid for at least 6months for pregnancy. Avoid trimethoprim for risk of marrow aplasia, or high -dose aspirin.
Beware Methotrexate toxicity
What is PENICILLAMINE used for?
Used in RA - thought to reduce IL1 synthesis and prevent the maturation of newly synthesized collagen
Side Effects:
- Rashes
- Disturbance of taste
- Proteinuria
What is LEFLUNOMIDE used for?
Treatment of RA
Side Effects:
- Liver impairment
- Interstitial lung disease
- Hypertension
