Medications Flashcards
What are thiazides diuretics?
Types of drugs that increases urine flow.
They promote diuretics (urine flow) by inhibiting the sodium/chloride cotransporter located int he distal convoluted tube of nephron.
Does thiazides decrease or increase sodium reabsorption? Why?
It decreases sodium reabsorption which increases fluid loss in urine. Which in turn decrease extra cellular fluid and plasma volume= reduce cardiac output ——> lowers blood pressure
What are thiazides usually used for?
Blood pressure effects
Some thiazides drugs
Hydrochlorothiazide, chlorothiazide, indapamide, and metolazone.
What are calcium channel blockers?
Lower blood pressure by preventing calcium from entering the cells of your heart and arteries. Calcium causes heart and arteries to contract more strongly. Therefore, by blocking calcium, CCB allow blood vessels to relax and open.
Several CCB
Amlodipine (Norvasc), diltiazam, felodipine, and verapamil
What are CCB used for?
CAD, chest pain, irregular heartbeats, Raynaud disease
Serious damages to HTN?
Heart attack, stroke, metabolic syndrome, HF
2 types of hypertension?
Primary (essential)- when a client has a high blood pressure reading in a 3 or more visit to the doctor, and that all possible causes of HTN has been ruled out.
Secondary-high blood pressure caused by other medical conditions, like diseases that affect the kidneys, endocrine system, and the heart.
