MEDICATIONS Flashcards
what do beta 2 agonists do?
bind to receptors in the lungs, MIMIC ADRENALINE (sympathetic NS) = BRONCHODILATION to open up the airways and help with breathing
SABA= short acting beta 2 agonists- SALBUTAMOL LABA= long acting-
SIDE EFFECTS: increased HR and BP, sweating, shaking, anxiety
anticholinergic/ muscarinic
block muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, results in decreased contractility of smooth muscle in the lungs (BRONCHODILATION) and reduction of mucus secretions therefore opening the airways
anticholinergic = PIUM
SIDE EFFECTS; dry mouth, pupil dilation,
slower onset- 4-6 weeks for effect
glucocorticosteroids/ corticosteroids
potent anti-inflammatory drug, decreased airway inflammation + reactivity by reducing inflammatory mediator. inhibiting the response of inflammatory cells.
BUDESONIDE, FLUTICASONE, BECLOMETHASONE
SIDE EFFECTS: hoarse voice, weight gain, thin skin that bruises easily
what is pulmonary rehabilitation and when is it used?
pulmonary rehabilitation is a programme that onvolves exercises and education for groups, can be 6 weeks or longer.
pts w/ COPD
BENEFITS: decreased dyspnoea, fatigue, acute exacerbations and INCREASED QUALITY OF LIFE
