Medication Administration W10 Flashcards
What is medication administration ?
it is preparing, giving, and evaluating the effectiveness of prescription and non-prescription drugs
What are the 7 rights of med admin?
- Right medication
- Right patient
- Right dose
- Right time
- Right route
- Right reason
- Right documentation
What is pharmacology ?
It is the study or science of drugs
What are the types of drug names ?
- Generic name*
- the name given to the drug by the developer of the med
- it is the official name and used in formal publication
EX. Acetaminophen - Trade name*
- the brand name, it is the commercial name given to a drug by the manufacturer
EX. Tylenol - Chemical name
- it describes the medication’s molecular structure
EX. N-acetyl-para-aminophenol = acetaminophen
What is drug classification ?
It indicates the desired effect on the body system, telling you what type of drug it is
EX. Antihypertensive, antipsychotic
What does medication form mean ?
It is the route of administration of the med
EX. Tablet, suppository, ointment, sublingual
What is pharmacodynamics ?
It is the study of what the drug does to the body
- side effects
- therapeutic effects
- adverse effects
- toxic effect
What is pharmaceutics ?
It is how various med forms or routes influence the way in which the body metabolizes a drug and the way in which the drug effects the body
What is pharmacokinetics ?
It is how the med moves into, through and out of the body
- Absorption; the movement of the drug from the site of admin to the bloodstream
- Distribution; transport of a drug in the body by the blood stream to its site of action
- Metabolism; the biological transformation or metabolic breakdown of a drug in the body (liver)
- Excretion; the elimination of drugs, highlighting kidney function (primary way of elimination)
What are the times associated with pharmacokinetics?
- onset of action; time it takes for the drug to elicit a therapeutic response
- peak effect; time needed for a drug to reach its maximum therapeutic response
- duration of action; the length of time the drug lasts before it wears off
- half-life; the time it takes for one half of the drug in the body to be removed
What is a drug schedule?
Health Canada determines whether or not a drug requires a prescription in order to regulate access to the drug
What are the drug schedules ?
Schedule 1; PRESCRIPTION in order to sell EX. amoxicillin
Schedule 1A; DUP/TRIP PRESCRIPTION due to potential abuse of drug EX. Tylenol#3
Schedule 2; NO PRESCRIPTION but pharmacist supervises sale EX. Tylenol#1
Schedule 3; NO PRESCRIPTION by pharmacist EX. hydrocortisone topical cream
Schedule 4; PRESCRIPTION by pharmacist
Unscheduled; no restriction on sales EX. tums, Tylenol
