EPIPEN USAGE

A
  1. Remove the EpiPen and sharps box from the EMK. Open the sharps box and place on floor near casualty. Gloves are recommended, however, there should be no delay when administering the EpiPen.
  2. Hold the EpiPen in the centre, keeping your fingers away from both ends.
  3. Place the orange tip on the casualty’s upper outer thigh at right angle (90 degrees) to the leg. (Only apply to the thigh). The EpiPen can be applied through normal clothing or on bare skin.
  4. Remove the blue safety cap.
  5. Press hard into the thigh until the auto-injector mechanism works (listen for a click) and hold in place for 10 seconds.
  6. The EpiPen can then be removed and disposed of the EpiPen in the sharps box. The orange tip will extend to cover the needle.
  7. Advise casualty to massage the injection site for 10 seconds.

EPIPEN PROCEDURE

WITH PREVIOUS HISTORY

• Ask if they have their own medication. If they do have have their own ask them to take it then follow the management for ANAPHYLACTIC SHOCK.

If they don’t have their own medication:

  • Ask the casualty or the travelling companion if he/she can administer the EpiPen.
  • If they can administer it give them the EPIPEN from the EMK. No Permission from Medlink is required. However you may need to contact Medlink after for further advice.
  • If the casualty or the travelling family member is not able to administer the auto injector, cabin crew must contact Medlink immediately to ask for permission to administer it.

WITH NO PREVIOUS HISTORY

  • Contact MedlLink immediately.
  • If unable to establish a connection to Medlink, make a PA for a medical professional on board who will administer the injection.
  • If no medical professional: Cabin crew who are trained and confident can administer the EpiPen to the casualty.
  • Continue contacting MedlLink until a connection is established.
