Signs and Symptoms
A sign is something you will observe and a symptom is what the casualty feels. Always compare the injured to the uninjured side of the body.
Allergies
Is the casualty allergic to anything – medications, certain foods etc
Medications
Are they currently taking any medications?
Past Medical History
Does the casualty have a history of any medical condition or surgery?
Last Meal
When did they last have something to eat or drink and what did they consume?
Events
What was the casualty doing prior to the incident? Where did the incident occur? What happened leading up to the event?

Danger
Check for any dangers before approaching the casualty.

Response
Check for verbal and physical response using the AVPU scale:
A – Alert and Conscious (eyes open and follows commands).
V – Responds to Voice.
P – Responds to Pain (check for response by tapping on the shoulders).
U – Unresponsive, no meaningful movement.
S
Shout for Help
Shout for SFS and defibrillator.
A
Airway
Open the airway using head tilt chin lift method.
B
Breathing
Look at the chest to assess for normal breathing for not less than 5 seconds and not more than 10 seconds.
C
Compressions
If not breathing start CPR.
D
Defibrillation
Operate defibrillator as soon as possible following the voice prompts.

CPR

A

No breathing

Not breathing at all or only “gasping” is a sign of cardiac arrest in someone who does not respond.

Start CPR as soon as possible.
C – Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
This consists of:
C – 30 Compressions
A – Open the airway with head tilt-chin lift B – Give 2 breaths
Shout “I’m starting CPR, SFS/Purser start Defib”. Fully expose the chest and start CPR.

ADULTS 8+/CHILDREN 1-7
compressions at the center of the nipple line

BABIES 0-1
Put 2 fingers in the centre of the chest just below the nipple line.
