Gram +ve microbes
Bacilli - listeria sp, clostridium sp
Cocco - staphylococci, streptococci
Gram -ve microbes
Bacilli - E coli, salmonella, campylobacter, legionella
Cocci - Neisseria meningitidis, N. gonorrhoeae
Parasites classification
Ectoparasites - live on skin and hair eg scabies, live
Endoparasites - live on mucosal surfaces or in tissues. Protozoa (single cells eg malaria) or helminths (worms eg schistosoma)
Otitis externa typically caused by
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
- resistant to penicillin, amoxicillin and ceftriaxone/cefotaxime
- environmental, opportunistic
Common streptococcus causing: Pharyngitis Pneumonia Skin and soft tissue infections UTI
- Group A strep
- S. pneumoniae
- Beta-haemolytic streptococci (esp GAS)
- Group B strep, enterococci
Gram stain
purple = positive pink = negative
Treat staph aureus
Flucloxacillin
- unless MRSA (methicillin resistant)
Septic pt not responding to broad spec Abx, think:
Fungi
Pharyngitis, lymphadenopathy, fatigue
think EBV or CMV
- treatment usually only if severe, in pregnant women or immunocompromised
Virus of common cold
Rhinovirus
Treat influenza in severe infections and vulnerable pateints
Oseltamivir, zanamivir
Facultative aerobic/anaerobic
Grow in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions eg Enterobacteriaceae-
E coli
Klebsiella sp.
Proteus sp.
