Otalgia:
- ear pain
- can come from different places, not always the ear
- ex: molars may make it seem like the ear is what is in pain
Otorrhea:
- Foul odor coming from the ear
- usually from a fungal infection, middle ear infection or lodged foreign object
Occluding vs non-Occluding:
- blocked or not blocked
- normally refers to cerumen but can also refer to foreign objects
ECMO:
-extra corporeal mechanical oxygenation
NICU:
-neo natal intensive care unit
Hyperbilirubinemia:
- extreme jaundice
- liver not yet functioning
- can cause kernicterus
Loop Diuretics:
-trying to get rid of edema/excess fluid
Cochlear Neuritis:
-inflammation of the VIII nerve
What is the tell tale sign of a tumor? (in terms of hearing)
-can hear decently but very poor word recognition
Serous:
-effusion is thin/clear
Mucoid:
-thicker, yellow effusion
Suppurative:
-Thick, yellow puss
Adhesive:
-Thickening of the eardrum causes deep retraction
Acute:
-quick onset, red, inflamed, painful
Recurrent:
-more than three times in six months
