Elements
A pure substance that is unique. Hydrogen, oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, calcium, and iron are well-known examples.
Epithelial Membrane
Epithelium attached to a layer of connective tissue.
Filler words
Additional words that make a definition complete.
Frontal plane
Divides anterior and posterior. Also known as the coronal plane.
Homeostasis
The steady internal conditions that living things keep up.
Inferior (or cadual)
Describes a position below or lower than another part of the body proper, near or toward the coccyx or the lowest part of the spinal column.
Lamina propria
Underlying connective tissue that helps support the fragile epithelial layer.
Lateral
Describes the side or direction toward the side of the body.
Medial
Describes the middle or direction toward the middle of the body.
Molecule
Chemical building blocks of all bodies.
Mucous Membrane
Epithelial membranes that line the body cavities and hollow passageway that open to the external environment.
Organ
A collection of tissues joined in a structural unit to serve a common function.
Organ system
Biological system consisting of a group of organs that work together to perform one or more functions.
Organelles
A specialized subunit, usually within a cell, that has a specific function.
Organism
Biological living system that functions as an individual life form.
