48
EEG
ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAM (EEG) - this procedure records the electrical activity of the brain. This procedure is usually done when the client complains of dizzi- ness, seizures, blackouts, severe headaches, and changes in visual acuity. Electrodes are attached to the cranium and the electrical activity recorded on a portable monitor that is carried with the client.
49
EKG or ECG
ELECTROCARDIOGRAM (EKG) - this procedure records the electrical activity of the heart. This procedure is usually done when there is possibility of cardiac pathology.
50
EMG or NCV
ELECTROMYOGRAM (EMG)/NERVE CONDUCTION STUDY(NCV) - the EMG is done to establish the electrical activity of the muscle. The nerve conduction study records the nerves ability to conduct impulses. These two procedures are usually done when the client complains of chronic radiating pain or loss of sensation along with numbness and tingling. Needles are actually inserted into the muscle and the nerve to establish the conduction velocity.
51
CAT SCAN
COMPUTERIZED AXIAL TOMOGRAPY (CAT SCAN) - the CAT Scan is a highly sophisticated x-ray that images soft tissue structures. This procedure is usually done is look at organs in the chest, thoracic, cranial and pelvic cavity.
52
MRI
MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING (MRI) - the MRI is another highly sophisti- cated x-ray. This procedure provides imaging of soft tissue structures. This is usually done to evaluate ligaments, cartilage, muscles, tendons, nerves, and blood vessels. The MRI actually distinguishes joint structures by their electronic signature.
53
Arthroscopy
the arthroscopy originally was used to evaluate joint structures for damage as a result of athletic activity. Now this procedure is used to both evaluate and surgical treat damaged joint structures. The concern for the client following arthroscopy is the re-establishment of quadriceps strength and proper patella tracking.
54
Echocardiogram
“Echo’s” are used to evaluate heart valves and the muscle tissue of the heart wall for pathology. This procedure is commonly ordered by the physi- cian for the client who has a heart murmur. This procedure actually bounces a sound wave off the wall of the heart. The sound wave is reflected back to the sound head and evaluated for pathology.
55
Bone Scan
this procedure is done to assess the bone itself for stress fractures and/or areas of inflammation. This is done by injecting dye into the region of inflamma- tion and then shooting an x-ray. If there is any inflammation the x-ray will identify those areas.
