Anatomic Position
The normal position with palms facing foward
Midline
An imaginary line that divides the body into two equal left and right halves.
Midaxillary Line
A vertical line running from the middle of the armpit (axilla) down to the hip.
Midclavicular line
A vertical line that passes through the middle of the collarbone (clavicle) and runs down the body.
Palmar
Relating to the palm of the hand.
Plantar
The bottom or sole of the foot.
Proximal
Closer to the point of attachment or the center of the body.
Distal
Farther from the point of attachment or the center of the body.
Anterior
The front part of the body or something located toward the front.
Posterior
The back part of the body or something located toward the back.
Clavicle
The collarbone, which connects the arm to the body at the sternum.
Medial
Closer to the midline of the body.
Lateral
Farther from the midline of the body, toward the sides.
Superior
Toward the head or upper part of the body.
Inferior
Toward the feet or lower part of the body.
Internal Rotation
Turning a body part inward, toward the center of the body (e.g., rotating your arm so your palm faces down).
External Rotation
Turning a body part outward, away from the center of the body (e.g., rotating your arm so your palm faces up).
Flexion
Bending a joint to decrease the angle between two body parts (e.g., bending your elbow or knee).
Extension
Straightening a joint to increase the angle between two body parts (e.g., straightening your elbow or knee).
Abduction
Moving a body part away from the midline of the body (e.g., raising your arm to the side).
Adduction
Moving a body part toward the midline of the body (e.g., bringing your arm back down to your side).
Supine Position
Lying on your back, facing upward.
Prone Position
Lying on your stomach, facing downward.
Fowler Position
A seated position with the head elevated at a 45-60° angle, often used to make breathing easier or for comfort.
