Why does the Medical Event Reporting System Exist?
It enables public health experts in Navy Medicine with greater experience and training to be aware of both the important medical events when they occur and the prevention and control actions taken by or being considered by local level medical staff.
What is a reportable medical event?
Events/Conditions that may pose an inherent, significant threat to public health and military operation
What potential do Medical events have?
Potential to affect large numbers of people, to be widely transmitted within a population, to have severe/life threatening clinical manifestations, and/or to disrupt military training and deployment
Who publishes the agreed upon Reportable Medical Event List?
The Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center (AFHSC)
What are the requirements for reporting?
Any diagnosis, case or medical event that has been identified in a DON health care beneficiary and classified as reportable per the Armed Forces RME Guide
Who is required to report medical events?
The healthcare provider who diagnoses or identifies a reportable case/medical-event is the individual required by BUMED DON wide policy to report it
How are Reportable Medical Events Classified?
Diagnosis, case or medical event becomes reportable once it has been classified as suspected, probable, or confirmed
What information is left out when reporting an outbreak or disease cluster?
Identifying information about individual patients
Medical Event Reports are not required for each individual case
How are reports processed?
Urgent or Routine
When should urgent reports be submitted?
Submitted no later than 24 hours after diagnosis has been made
When should routine reports be submitted?
No later than 30 days after their identification
What is the Navy’s Official Reporting Method?
The Disease Reporting System Internet (DRSI)
How does the Disease Reporting System Internet process information?
It Captures, Stores and Communicates information related to Medical Event Reports
What other options are available if DRSI isn’t available or internet isn’t available for the reporter’s use?
Urgent reports may be made by phone, priority naval message or properly encrypted email
How should routine reports be submitted if their is no internet connectivity?
Via U.S. Mail
