open-ended, direct, forced

multiple/compound, leading (imply judgement)

What is the purpose of summarizing?
shows the patient you were listening and makes sure that you understood everything.
what is the purpose of transitional statements?
explains to patient why the next question may be important, allows progression of encounter, permission to sensitive topics
How do you direct the conversation with talkative patients?
use direct questions more, open questions sparingly
How do you encourage silent patients?
use more open ended questions, silence can be useful
What is the best thing to do for incapacitated patient?
get info from other people and old records - must have a very detailed physical exam
What is the best thing to do when there is a language barrier?
get a translator - communication is key
What is the worse thing to do with an angry, paranoid, dependent or demanding patient?
‘rise to the occasion’ - do not get angry back
How do you help a tearful/crying patient?
allow time to cry and be empathetic
How do you handle a seductive patient?
- allow for more personal space and use chaperone
- always be professional
- may need to confront, set ground rules/limits
What about a patient who has multiple symptoms and provides limited detail?
be open minded, patient, and use direct questions
