Medical Gasses Flashcards
What is a compressed gas (non liquified)?
- remains at gas at normal temperature and under pressure (2000-2500 psig)
- cryogenic liquid at low temps
What is the pressure of O2?
1800-2400 psig at 70F
What is the pressure of air?
1800 psig at 70F
What is a compressed gas (liquified)?
-becomes liquid at normal temp and pressures from 25-2500 Psig
What is the pressure of N2O when condensed to a liquid?
745 psig at 70F
Who regulates gas/cylinders?
DOT
- regulates construction & handling of all medical cylinders
- design, construction, testing, marking, labeling, filling, storage, handling, maintenance, transportation
- q5years cylinders inspected
- E cylinders tested q10years
What is the most common cylinder in healthcare?
E cylinder- 660L at 1900 psig for O2
What is the hydrostatic test?
- check cylinder for leaks, expansion, wall stress
- in water pressurized to 3000 pig -> check water displacement
DOT marking on a cylinder?
- date of testing
- inspectors mark
- DOT3AA- approved for medical use
- serial number
What is the H cylinder size/capacity for O2?
6900 L at 2200 psig
What is the PISS system?
- Pin Index Safety System
- it is not failsafe
Cylinder Saftey (9)
- handled by trained personnel
- no oil, grease, lube
- 20 F < temp < 130F
- tight connections
- DO NOT obstruct pressure relief device
- DO NOT cross use regulators, hoses
- DO NOT use reducer adapters
- keep valves closed when not in use
- valve easily damaged
Pressure relief devices
- rupture disc
- fusible plug that melts at 170-212F
- pressure relief valve- spring loaded
