What are the primary objectives of MERs for Navy Public Health?
to be aware of important events + prevent/control actions already taken by local medical staff
to be proactive in offering assistance to medical staff
What are MERs submitted for?
any diagnosis, case, or event ID in DON health care beneficiaries + classified or research ID as reportable cases/events.
Who do you submit findings of a case/medical event that is classified by research labs as reportable?
Navy Environmental and PREVMED unit (NEPMU)
What systems or correspondence types are used to submit MERs?
DRSi- Disease Reporting system internet
by US mail if internet is unavailable
urgent must by phone, priority Naval msg, encrypted e-mail, + within 24hrs
Which 25 diseases that are reported within 24hrs?

any diagnosis listed in RME list

What is included in an outbreak report?
only submit one per outbreak (+2 people), no PII
What are distribution requirements for MERs? and what action is taken if unit security is a concern?
submit as unclassified
mark “for official use only”
consult information security or CO for classification if concerned for unit security
When is a healthcare provider required to submit a communicable disease report?
diagnosis/case/medical event classified as suspected, probable, confirmed
