Medical Devices, Equipment & Technology Flashcards
Catheter
A thin flexible tube that is inserted into the body.
Cystoscope
An instrument that can be inserted into the urethra and moved toward the bladder. A
cystoscope has one port (access) through which the inside of the body can be viewed and
one port into which other medical instruments can be inserted.
Foley catheter
A catheter that is inserted in the bladder to enable urinary drainage.
Laser
A beam of light used in some surgeries
Resectoscope
A type of cystoscope that allows removal of tissue from the inside of the body.
Radiofrequency (RF)
Radiant energy in a particular frequency range. In interventional procedures, RF energy is
often used to ablate tissue.
Thermal energy
Describes heat-based sources of energy that are used in interventional procedures. Thermal
energy can be wet, meaning that vapor is created, or dry, meaning that heated energy is
applied directly to tissue.
Ultrasound
Uses high-frequency sound waves to construct images of organs/structures.
