Medical Asepsis Flashcards
Develop an understanding of disease precaution and prevention.
Asepsis
A process for reducing infection from disease-causing microorganisms
There are 2 types
Medical Asepsis: Prevent direct contact with microorganisms through hand hygiene and clean gloves.
Surgical Asepsis: Sterile technique, procedures to eliminate all microorganisms.
Infectious Process
-Incubation period
-Prodromal stage
-Illness Stage
-Convalescence
Incubation Period
The time between pathogen entry and the appearance of the first symptoms.
Common cold: 1-2 days
Flu: 1-3 days
Mumps: 15-18 days
Chicken Pox: 2-3 weeks
Prodromal Stage
The stage between the onset of non-specific symptoms to more specific symptoms. Patient is capable of spreading the disease.
Illness Stage
When a patient manifests specific symptoms of the type of infection.
Convalescence
The interval when the acute symptoms of infection disappear and the body tries to replenish its resources and return to a state of homeostasis. The recovery stage.
Chain of Infection
- Infectious Agent
- Reservoir
- Portal of Exit
- Mode of Transmission
- Portal of Entry
- Host
Immune Response
The body’s response to neutralize a pathogen.
Susceptibility
The likeliness that one will acquire an infection.
Health Care Associated Infection (HAI)
An infection acquire after admission to a health care facility e.g. C-diff.
Factors that Influence Susceptability
-Age
-Nutritional Status
-Stress
-Disease Process
