Medical Flashcards
What is iontropic vs. Chronotropic vs. Dromotropic?
Ino = contractility, Chrono = rate, Dromo = conductivity
What is the Pons responsible for?
The breathing depth and patternW
What is the medulla responsible for?
The heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate
What is the Hypothalamus?
Considered the link between the nervous and endocrine systems
What is the pituitary?
Considered the master gland of the endocrine system. split into the anterior and posterior pituitary
What hormones come from the posterior pituitary?
Oxytocin and ADH
What hormones come from the anterior pituitary?
Growth hormone, luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, ACTH, prolactin
What is the Thyroid gland?
Secretes thyroxine which is a metabolic hormone, and calcitonin which is responsible for the calcium levels in the blood
What is the parathyroid gland?
Secretes PTH which is an antagonist of calcitonin to reverse effects.
What is the adrenal gland?
Split into 2 parts - medulla = middle, cortex = outside.
Medulla secretes catecholamines (epi/norepi) for emotional and physical stress responses
Cortex secretes corticosteroids and mineralocorticoids for mineral balance in the body and metabolism
What is the pancreas?
Secretes glucagon and insulin and is responsible for the BGL balance in the body
What are the Gonads?
Secrete the sex hormones like testosterone, estrogen and progesterone
What are the routes of absorption?
Ingestion, inhalation, injection, absorption
What does DUMBELS stand for?
Diarrhea, Urination, Miosis, Bronchospasm, Emesis, Lacrimation, Sweating. used for cholinergic toxidrome
What is Thermolysis?
Heat loss in the body. Can be done through:
Radiation = based on air temp
Conduction = based on physical contact with objects (water)
Convection = based on wind movement
Evaporation = sweating
