Mediation Analyses and Indirect Effects Flashcards
What is the aim of mediation analyses?
To find whether a third variable explains or accounts for the relationship between a predictor and criterion
How is the causal chain identified in mediation analyses?
Through shared variance between the predictor and mediator
What is a direct effect in mediation analyses?
The unique association a predictor has with the criterion
What is an indirect effect in mediation analyses?
The effect of the predictor on the criterion via the mediator
What are the 4 paths/ questions that are examined in mediation analyses?
- IV is related to (‘causes’) mediator
- IV is related to DV
- Mediator is related to DV controlling for IV
- IV is less/not related to DV when mediator is controlled for
What kind of analysis is used to test relationships in mediation analyses?
HMR analysis
What is put in the first block for a mediation analysis?
The IV
What is put in the second block for a mediation analysis?
The mediator
What does it mean when the coefficient for the mediator is significant in block 2 of a mediation analysis?
The mediator is related to the DV when the IV is controlled for
What does it mean when the coefficient for the IV is no longer significant in block 2 of mediation analysis?
Full mediation
What does it mean when the coefficient for the IV is still significant in block 2 of a mediation analysis?
Partial mediation
What is bootstrapping?
When you re-run the analysis after creating multiple samples from the original sample to increase power.
