Recognises the promotion of dominant ideology BUT suggests owners do not directly control content, instead rely on media workers through methods such as agenda setting.
What is infotainment?
Refers do information packed down so it becomes entertaining.
Why might infotainment encourage unethical journalism?
Phone hacking/provoking news stories/paying public officials for private info
What trends does the pursuit of profit contribute to?
1) Marginalisation/exclusion of minority views
2) Tabloidisation of news content
3) Stories ‘killed off’
How does the pursuit of profit contribute to marginalisation?
Organisations aim for mass audiences so will cover stories to appeal to majority of society- avoids criticism by going with norm.
How does the pursuit of profit contribute to tabloidisation of news content?
News content written as infotainment to make it easy and entertaining to read (appeals to mass audience)- informal.
How has the pursuit of profit contributed to ‘killing off’ stories?
Media outlets need to continuously provide shocking stories to keep audience interested- cannot keep repeating. Stories that may challenge advertisers are killed off to protect profits.
